Hundreds of passengers were evacuated from a northbound train at Hong Kong’s Mong Kok East station on Wednesday morning after smoke was seen coming out from underneath its carriages.
The MTR Corporation said a preliminary check suggested that the incident was caused by brake issues, adding that an engineering team would carry out a thorough investigation.

“At about 7.45am, when a train on the East Rail line heading in the Lo Wu direction arrived [at] platform 2 at Mong Kok East station, staff noticed white smoke coming from underneath the train,” the rail operator said.

“They immediately called police and informed firefighters, as well as arranged for passengers to disembark from the train for safety.”

The MTR Corp said the incident had a “slight” effect on the East Rail line services, with another train arriving several minutes later to transport passengers.

“We have also made adjustments to our train service and changed the end stations of some trains to maintain smooth train operations,” the company added.
