Hong Kong authorities will conduct road tests for buses on the Yau Ma Tei section of the Central Kowloon Bypass starting next week, with trials for other forms of public transport to begin gradually ahead of its expected opening by the end of the year.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said on Saturday that the major structural works of the Yau Ma Tei section had been completed and had passed fire safety inspections and tests.

“Franchised bus operators will begin road tests on the Central Kowloon Bypass’s Yau Ma Tei section next week. Tests for other public transport will also gradually commence to make comprehensive preparations for its opening,” Chan said in her blog.

“I will continue to work proactively with my colleagues to prepare for the opening of this short and smooth-flowing road. Our goal is to provide a new experience for Hong Kong residents travelling between East and West Kowloon.”

The Yau Ma Tei section of the 4.7km-long bypass is set to open by the end of this year. The authorities have proposed an HK$8 toll for a tunnel in the section.

The dual three-lane bypass, which connects Yau Ma Tei and Kowloon Bay, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion on major trunk roads in Kowloon by providing a shorter and faster route, allowing motorists to save fuel and time.
