Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation will largely complete the main structure of a new station on the Tung Chung line by the first half of 2027, using “community-friendly” construction measures to reduce noise.
The rail giant said on Tuesday that it would finish boring a 1.3km (0.8-mile) tunnel in the next three months and complete most of the main structure of Tung Chung West station by the first half of next year.
The new station is located west of Yat Tung Estate, a public housing estate in western Tung Chung.
The MTR Corp said it was using different construction methods to reduce noise.
Lee Ka-leung, the corporation’s head of project delivery for Lantau, said the station followed a “top-down construction” method, meaning the ground-level roof slab of the building was being built first to contain noise and dust.
He said the method allowed underground excavation and above-ground work to proceed simultaneously, increasing efficiency.
This was also the first time the corporation was rotating the boring machine underground rather than extracting and repositioning it on the ground surface, he added.
According to Lee, this allowed the corporation to cut roughly half the time needed to start boring the second tube of the two-way tunnel, while optimising logistical arrangements and reducing noise.
Lee said the corporation had conducted routine monitoring to ensure noise was controlled at a certain level, and also held regular meetings with local residents, who expressed satisfaction.
“Local residents are comfortable with the noise,” Tung Chung resident Andrew Spires said, adding that the new project would make local transport more convenient.
Tung Chung West station forms part of the Tung Chung Line Extension, one of seven railway schemes recommended under the city’s Railway Development Strategy 2014.

The project, approved by the Executive Council in early 2023 at an estimated cost of HK$19.5 billion (US$2.5 billion), also includes a new intermediate station at the Tung Chung East reclamation area, between Sunny Bay and the existing Tung Chung station.
The railway operator finished the topping-out of Tung Chung East station in February, marking the start of full-scale mechanical and electrical works.
The government estimated that the new project would reduce travel time from the Tung Chung West and Tung Chung East stations to Tsim Sha Tsui and Central by 12 and 21 minutes, respectively.
The entire project is expected to be concluded by 2029.
