A Thai transgender woman seeking revenge on her Japanese ex-boyfriend defrauded 73 of his compatriots out of nearly 30 million baht (US$880,000) over 13 years.
Police launched an investigation after a Japanese man visiting Thailand recently reported that a transgender woman called Amy had conned him out of 15 million baht.
The 36-year-old man met Amy in Thailand in January when she posed as a Hong Kong tourist who had lost her passport and purse, according to the Thai media outlet Thaiger.
She borrowed money from him to pay for a hotel and they quickly formed an intimate relationship after exchanging contact details.
The man dated her several times and lent her money for insurance and medical expenses, but she never repaid him.

Amy then tricked him into buying gold for her, which she exchanged for cash before disappearing.
On August 4, the 49-year-old Thai trans woman, whose real name is Uthai Nantakhan, was arrested in Bangkok.
Police revealed that she pretended to be a tourist from Taiwan or Hong Kong in Thailand, lying to and manipulating men to gain sympathy from them.
She would claim she had lost her purse and needed money to renew her passport, or pretend to have contracted Covid-19 to get cash for treatment.
She also lured victims into investing in fake businesses, later claiming the projects had failed and making off with their investment funds.
Police discovered that all Amy’s victims were Japanese nationals.
She claimed a Japanese boyfriend had dumped her years ago, and that the pain and anguish had made her turn to a life of crime.
“When I was in college, my Japanese boyfriend abandoned me during a trip, and left me to pay all the bills. I was heartbroken,” she said.
“I was also scammed out of money by another Japanese man I dated before, so I really hate the Japanese and wanted to take revenge on Japanese men.”
Whether the motivation for her crimes is genuine remains unclear.
Police reports indicate that Amy scammed 73 Japanese men out of 26 million baht between 2011 and 2024.

In Thailand, people convicted of fraud can face up to three years in prison and a maximum fine of 60,000 baht (US$1,800).
Amy’s story sparked widespread discussion on social media.
One online observer wrote on YouTube: “Amy’s experience of being deceived by Japanese men is likely just an excuse. She probably thinks Japanese people are gentle and easy to deceive.”
“Her narrow-mindedness led her down a path of crime. The best way to take revenge on those you dislike is to become a better person,” said another person.
