A pet dog in China almost sacrificed its own life after it was bitten by a viper while saving its owner.
The owner, Meng, and her family moved to a village in northern China’s Hebei province in June.
They made the move so that her two pet Shiba Inu dogs, two-year-old Hetao and one-year-old Duoduo, had more space to play.
On the morning of August 29, Meng heard Duoduo barking in the front garden.

She thought he was barking at a stranger, but when she and Hetao went out, she saw a snake.
Meng immediately called Duoduo back, but the snake also went towards her. Hetao immediately darted forward to protect Meng.
Meng said Hetao was always the first to protect the family.
She called her two pet dogs back and phoned her husband, who was not at home.
However, five minutes later, he came back and found the snake.

It was a short-tailed Mamushi, a venomous pit viper.
It was then that Meng and her husband realised that Hetao had been bitten by the viper, her wound already swollen and her body was stiffening.
Meng immediately drove her to the pet clinic where vets cleaned up the wound. No antidote was available.
She stayed by Hetao’s side while her husband drove hours to Beijing to buy snakebite medicine.
Meng took Hetao home from the clinic that evening, and stayed up to feed her water every 30 minutes. She said she cried every time Hetao howled in pain. Hetao’s whole head was swollen.
She took the dog back to the clinic the next morning to continue the treatment.
To their relief, Hetao slowly recovered and was able to eat and drink.

A week later, Hetao was out of danger, and after three weeks, her wound had scabbed over.
Meng said she would spare no effort in saving the life of her pet dogs because they are her family.
“She risked her life to save me. I did everything to save her. Everything we did is for us to keep each other company in the future,” Meng said.
She reminded people to keep their pets in safe places and not to take them to forests and grasslands after the rain.
“I would spend all my money to save my pet,” one online observer said.
“I hope she will live a long and happy life,” said another.
