When Bling Empire: New York – a spin-off from the popular reality show, Bling Empire – landed on Netflix, viewers were introduced to some new faces. Among them were Hong Kong power couple Stephen and Deborah Hung, the duo upping the glamour stakes more than any other cast member. Married in 2012, the Hungs – regular fixtures on the Hong Kong social circuit – made a grand entrance on the show, splashing cash on designer jewellery, dresses and fancy restaurants. In one episode, Deborah models couture outfits by French fashion designer Stéphane Rolland while onboard her husband’s private jet with the Frenchman. “If I don’t go to Couture, Haute Couture comes to me,” she posted on her Instagram account. But what else do we know about the blinged-up couple whose flamboyant lifestyles could easily have inspired the hit book and movie Crazy Rich Asians ? Born in Hong Kong with a silver spoon firmly embedded in his mouth, Stephen Hung added to his cash pile thanks to careers in investment banking and real estate. The website Celebrity Net Worth puts his wealth at US$400 million. LinkedIn tells us he was educated at New York’s Columbia University and the University of Southern California and kicked off his career as vice-president of Real Estate at Citi before moving to Merrill Lynch where he was head of investment banking, Asia. Today he is chairman of the private investment firm SH Capital Group, which mostly handles real estate and hospitality. A father to two sons Ivan and Sean from a previous marriage, Hung boasts more than 800,000 followers on Instagram and once made headlines when he bought 30 customised Rolls-Royce Phantoms for US$20 million. Meanwhile Mexican-born socialite and former model Deborah has many feathers in her diamond-encrusted cap. She founded the modelling agency Dreamodels and is a qualified lawyer with a taste for high fashion – her Instagram account shows her sit front row at fashion shows from Paris to Milan. She also has a penchant for the colour pink, whether it is fur coats or the pink bejewelled sports car she zips around Hong Kong in with a personalised “DEBORAH” plate. But while the Hungs take conspicuous consumption to soaring heights, they are not the only power couple in the city. Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai whose films include In The Mood For Love and Happy Together and his actress wife Carina Lau Kar-ling, who dated for 19 years before marrying in 2008, also pack a power punch. The couple reportedly own at least 10 luxury properties worth a whopping US$115 million. But fame does not have to equal ostentatious displays of wealth. Taking a less “blinged” path are couple Jasmine Tan and Chow Yun-fat, one of the most recognisable faces from Hong Kong’s golden age of cinema. Chow starred in films such as A Better Tomorrow , The Killer and Hard Boiled , but prefers a modest lifestyle, often spotted shopping at wet markets and riding public transport. Media reports have quoted Chow as saying that he plans to leave his fortune to charity.
