Centres that provide traditional and luxury Chinese post-partum medical care are gaining popularity among new mothers in Australia, according to a report by the country’s national broadcaster.
Some new mothers are now paying as much as A$50,000 (US$32,000) for a 26-day stay at a newly opened centre in the Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney.
According to an advertisement on the centre’s Facebook page, a typical package includes a round-the-clock personal caregiver, daily meals, plus regular check-ups by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and nurses.
Additional amenities such as post-partum yoga, post-pregnancy weight-loss exercises, beauty massages, and even maternity and baby photography are also provided.
Tidus Chau, the director of the centres, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that around a dozen mothers take advantage of the services each month.
“Our main customer base is middle and high-income families,” said Chau.
