Public fury at Chinese woman who fundraised online to cover US$101,800 compensation order over brutal killing of friend prompts Weibo ban
- Murder victim was stabbed in the neck multiple times by enraged ex-boyfriend of her friend as the latter hid behind the locked door of their shared Tokyo flat
- Mother of the victim has been embroiled in a civil legal battle on mainland over the culpability of the friend of her dead daughter for 6 years

A Chinese woman found responsible in a civil case for the brutal killing of her friend has been banned from Weibo for seeking donations on the platform to pay a court-imposed compensation.
Liu Nuanxi, who was previously called Liu Xin, started a Weibo fundraiser on Tuesday after a court in eastern China’s Qingdao city upheld a previous verdict, ordering her to pay the family of her murdered friend nearly 700,000 yuan (US$101,800) in compensation.
The 30-year-old, who was held liable for failing to protect Jiang Ge, who was murdered by Liu’s ex-boyfriend outside their shared flat in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, raised more than 25,000 yuan in 24 hours.
This triggered a public backlash and her account was permanently shut down by Weibo on Wednesday.

The donations, which went into Liu’s account via Weibo’s tipping function, led to “a great number of complaints from users” and were in violation of China’s Charity Law, which only allows registered charity organisations to hold fundraisers, the platform said in a statement.
