An 81-year-old man from central China who kept the memory of his late wife alive in more than 50 diaries penned over the last decade has touched millions with his writings about their enduring love. The man, surnamed Ren, and from Xinxiang in Henan province, gained widespread admiration after his granddaughter shared photos of entries from his 55 diaries about his marriage in its later years on social media last week. Ren had kept journals for the last decade but stopped when his wife died last month and he was overcome with grief, his granddaughter, also surnamed Ren, told the Xiaoxiang Morning Post. “Without her, I lose interest in everything. I’m unable to pull myself together,” wrote Ren in one of his most recent entries shared online by his granddaughter. “She was 24 when she married me. She has been by my side for 60 years. Although she was 84 years old, I wanted to let her enjoy life for many more years since we are more well off now,” he wrote in another entry. Ren has since resumed his writing and turned his many diary entries into a memoir of his six-decade-long marriage. His wife had been ill for a number of years before she died at the age of 84 in December, last year, Ren junior said. “He started his memoirs with the story of how they first met, then continued with whatever he could remember,” she explained. Ren junior said that when no one in the family could remember when her grandmother’s last health check had taken place, they found the answer in her grandfather’s diary. “He always took detailed notes for things about grandma,” she said. He also wrote about other family members. “Once I saw him write in his diary: ‘Little granddaughter came back home late again. Worried very much.’ I enjoyed this feeling of being cared about,” Ren junior said. “He must have loved my granny so much,” she said, adding that their entire family had been envious of their love. Many people who read the diary entries online expressed similar thoughts. “Their love is true and beautiful,” one person said on Weibo. “The most romantic thing in life is to grow old with someone you love,” commented another person.
