A 59-year-old grandmother in China who gave her three-year-old grandson an Afro perm for the Lunar New Year has delighted mainland social media. The unnamed grandma from Hebei province in northern China went viral after posting a video of the perm she did herself at home for her grandson, Star Video reported. To celebrate the Lunar New Year, the parents of the boy had planned to give him a new hairstyle. However, when they went to their local hair salon, they discovered dozens of people were queuing outside the shop. They initially gave up on the idea before they thought of their son’s grandmother, who had run a hair salon 30 years ago. They asked her, and despite being a little rusty, she agreed to do it herself at home. The family set off to his grandmother’s home in a remote area where she was waiting and well prepared with tools such as curlers and towels. In the viral video, the boy sits with his head covered by a towel with his hair in rollers underneath as his grandmother clamps his hair. Initially, she didn’t heat the rollers properly, so the boy’s hair looked the same as before. Then she spent 6 yuan (about US$1) on a heater for the curling sticks and rollers and gave it another try. When she finished the final steps and removed the rollers from his head, her grandson had curly hair. The video has trended online, with many people amused by the scene. One person said: “The little boy looks so cute.” Another commented: “Because of the lovely hairstyle, now the grandson looks like the bestie of his grandma.” “Now the little grandson is a little grandma, so adorable,” a third person said.
