Receiving red envelopes with “lucky money” is one of the most anticipated traditions during the Lunar New Year in China, but this year one boy decided to give all his lucky money to his pet dog.

In a viral video taken by his mother in eastern China’s Anhui province on January 28, the two-year-old boy, named Rourou, bows to the family dog as a new year greeting before offering her four red envelopes with 200 yuan (US$30) each, Star Video reported.

Bowing to family elders when receiving red packets is a new year tradition in many areas of China. Rourou had only received the red packets from his mother just minutes before he gave them to the pet dog.

When asked why he did this, Rourou told his mother: “Because she is my friend, and I want to wish her Happy New Year.”

His mother later recovered the red packets from the dog.

“Such a good child, giving everything he had to his friend,” one person commented on the video.

“Although the dog who received the bows should be the one giving him red packets,” they added jokingly.
