Receiving red envelopes with “lucky money” is one of the most anticipated traditions during the Lunar New Year in China, but this year one boy decided to give all his lucky money to his pet dog.

In a viral video taken by his mother in eastern China’s Anhui province on January 28, the two-year-old boy, named Rourou, bows to the family dog as a new year greeting before offering her four red envelopes with 200 yuan (US$30) each, Star Video reported.

Bowing to family elders when receiving red packets is a new year tradition in many areas of China. Rourou had only received the red packets from his mother just minutes before he gave them to the pet dog.

When asked why he did this, Rourou told his mother: “Because she is my friend, and I want to wish her Happy New Year.”

His mother later recovered the red packets from the dog.

“Such a good child, giving everything he had to his friend,” one person commented on the video.

“Although the dog who received the bows should be the one giving him red packets,” they added jokingly.

Dog chases owner’s car for 10 minutes to bid farewell

A video of a black dog chasing his owner’s car for 10 minutes after they said farewell moved many on mainland social media to tears on January 27.

The dog’s owner, surnamed Lu, was leaving his village in northeastern China’s Jilin province last week to return to the city for work when he spotted his dog, Doudou, chasing his car just metres behind.

A relieved Lu later checked Doudou made it back home safely by looking at surveillance footage from a camera installed in his home. Photo: Douyin

Lu said Doudou gave chase for more than 10 minutes, and he wanted to stop the car and hug him but resisted the temptation as he feared Doudou would keep following him and get lost.

Lu later saw Doudou returning home safely on a surveillance camera installed in his home.

Lost dog returns home after a month

A family in central China’s Henan province received the best possible New Year’s gift — their pet dog came home after going missing.

On January 24, the third day of the Lunar New Year, the dog’s owner, surnamed Wang, and his family heard a series of bangs on their front door.

They went to investigate and were surprised to discover it was their dog Doudou who had been missing for a month.

The family had raised Doudou for three and a half years and were heartbroken when he went missing, fearing he had been stolen by dog thieves that operate in the area.

Although he had lost a lot of weight and had some minor injuries, he was otherwise unharmed.

Wang said he burst into tears when he saw Doudou and vowed to make sure he never went missing again.
