‘Let it go’: heartbroken woman in China calls police after boyfriend breaks up with her ‘for no reason’ and is convinced to move on by officer

  • A woman in China called the police and asked them to track down her ex-boyfriend and ask him why he broke up with her
  • The story was picked up by local media with the advice police gave her becoming one of the most searched news items online

A patient police officer in China who calmed down a woman after she called the police when her boyfriend ended their relationship has been praised in a trending story on mainland social media.

Last month, a woman from eastern China’s Zhejiang province called the police and asked them to track down her ex-boyfriend, who had just ended their six-year relationship. The unidentified woman asked the police to ask her ex why he broke up with her, video and audio recordings released by the police revealed.

“Is it necessary to find him?” An anonymous officer asks during a phone conversation with the woman.

The officer continued: “Remember an old Chinese saying, ‘Not resign until reaching the Yellow River; not turn around until hitting the South Wall’.”

The Chinese expression refers to people who do not give up until realising their efforts are futile.

“But I just can’t figure out why he treated me like this,” the sobbing woman replied.

“He has already hurt you so much. If he returns to say some words to you, will you get involved with him again? You should be aware of what the root of this problem is and don’t give him any opportunity to take advantage of you,” said the officer.

“Now you clearly understand the type of person he is. It means your dedication to him is not worth it. However, there is a person waiting for you who is worth your dedication.

“Don’t feel you are unlucky. Instead, you should feel lucky because it’s better than the alternative scenario where he reveals his real nature after marrying you.”

He went on to say: “Block his mobile number and other contact information. Break up with him in a decent manner. Have a peaceful mind and go out to meet more people, rather than staying alone and having various dark thoughts.”

The officer’s advice has caused a stir on mainland Chinese social media after it became one of the most searched news items on the top search engine Baidu.com and received 10 million views on Douyin.

“This police officer is so sweet!” Said one person online.

“What the officer said is very pragmatic. Cutting the loss in time is important if you want to have a happy life,” another said.

Others were critical of her reaction to the break-up and for wasting police resources.

“She called the police about this issue. I came to understand why her boyfriend left her,” said one person.
