A man in China who remarried his former wife the day before she went to the hospital for emergency treatment of a blood disease has struck a chord with millions on mainland social media. The unidentified man from Shanghai in eastern China said he decided to remarry his ex-wife, whom he had divorced three years prior, after she was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia two weeks ago. The couple applied for registration of their second marriage the day before the woman went into the intensive care unit at a local hospital for treatment. A video of the couple circulating on mainland social media showed the pair driving to a local marriage registration office where they put two wedding portraits on the desk as they lined up to formalise their remarriage. “Other couples celebrate their marriage with flowers and wine, but the reality for us is bursting out crying and rushing to the hospital for life-saving treatment,” the husband told Sina News. The man said the couple had divorced on an impulse, but they’d still been living together and ultimately stayed a couple. When the woman was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia and the man received information about holding last rites he realised his wife’s life was in danger and asked her to remarry him. “I think it’s a part of my love and commitment to her,” he said. Despite preparing for the worst after the diagnosis, the couple went through with remarrying on the day before the woman went to intensive care for treatment. After receiving their marriage certificate, the remarried couple went to the hospital in preparation. In the video, the woman is seen lying on a sickbed in hospital. The man explained that his wife was currently receiving treatment in the hospital, and her condition is stable. The couple’s video story has been viewed by millions online in mainland China where it quickly went viral and trended as a news topic. One person remarked: “A true love in reality. How wonderful!” Another said: “I hope they will have a happy ending.” Inspiring stories about couples’ love for each other frequently resonate on mainland social media. Last week, a man from Henan province in central China trended after he drunkenly begged his parents-in-law to help convince his wife to stop breastfeeding their two-year-old child because he believed she was too tired. Late last year, a couple in eastern China went viral after they cancelled their divorce plans after the woman caught Covid-19 and was nursed back to health by her husband.
