A mainland Chinese blogger who travelled to Hong Kong to experience life as a homeless person has sparked a lively discussion on social media nationwide.

The blogger, who goes by the name Xiaoyang and is based in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong which borders Hong Kong, has 59,000 followers on the mainland social media platform, Xiaohongshu, and mainly posts funny videos.

On April 8, he shared details of a trip to the city the title of which was “A night sleeping on the streets of Hong Kong”.

He and a friend began their trip “by setting off in flip-flops and wanting to experience homelessness in full uniform”.

In the evening, they headed to Lan Kwai Fong, one of the city’s bar districts, “to see the nightlife in Hong Kong”.

The blogger said they thought that a McDonald’s restaurant on Queen’s Road West in Hong Kong’s Central district would be busy on a holiday night and “might be good for a full night’s stay”.
