‘Will this scare Western visitors?’: online post by Hong Kong man which mocks napping construction workers inside city airport terminal draws public backlash

- Man who took the photo and suggested workers could tarnish city’s international image is roundly attacked by many observers on social media

A Hong Kong man is facing intense criticism over a photo accompanied by provocative comments which he posted online.
Taken last week at the Hong Kong International Airport, the photo shows two construction workers resting on communal benches in the terminal building.
It was posted on a public Facebook group called Hong Kong Current Affairs which shares news about the city and has 67,000 members.
The photo was accompanied by a comment from the poster which read: “Hong Kong ‘International’ Airport? Will this scene, in which workers are allowed to lie down and sleep in the terminal building, scare first-time Western travellers to Hong Kong?”

It shows two tired-looking construction workers in protective yellow and orange uniforms with their shoes off sleeping on a bench, one of them is wearing a mask.
The award-winning airport is a major aviation hub for Asia and was built on a massive reclamation site in the southwest corner of the city.
