A young woman whose blue hair and black lipstick received no opposition from her relatives at a family dinner has sparked a discussion on mainland social media about expectations surrounding women’s hair and make-up choices.
The woman, surnamed Luo, in her early 20s, was hanging out with her friends when she received a text message from her father telling her to join him and other family members for dinner at a restaurant.
Luo, who also wears a nail in her lip, went straight to the restaurant, only to find that her relatives seemed unconcerned by her appearance.
“My father said I looked cool and wanted to have a photo with me,” she said in a video uploaded to the internet about her experience.
Luo, who lives in Yibin in the southwestern province of Sichuan, said she usually dresses in a grunge style, according to the website Bailu Video.
Her relatives have grown used to her unconventional appearance and do not think there is anything wrong with her make-up, she said.
