People on social media in China have applauded a quick-thinking off-duty doctor who helped an accident victim using a badminton racquet and plastic bag to protect her injured leg.
On April 5, a doctor in eastern China’s Shandong province, Liu Shuanglei, witnessed a car accident on his way home from work.
His wife was driving as the couple headed home to celebrate his mother’s birthday.
They slowed down after seeing some twigs scattered on the road at which point Liu noticed an elderly woman crying out in pain. She had been injured in a traffic accident.
Liu asked his wife to pull over so that he could check on her.

He noticed she was suffering from a bone fracture to her lower left leg. There were no other obvious injuries.
A doctor at a hospital pain management department, Liu called the emergency doctor there, who told him to immobilise her leg with splints and bandages to prevent further harm.
Liu said the twigs on the road were too weak, so he decided to use his badminton racquets as splints.
Instead of bandages, he used some plastic bags in his car.
The elderly woman in her 70s was then rushed to Liu’s hospital for further treatment. Liu stayed with her until the ambulance arrived because she was alone and appeared to be helpless.
Her daughter told Beijing Youth Daily that she appreciated Liu’s help, and had thanked him in person.
“Some people are afraid of being blackmailed and refuse to help accident victims, but he was so kind-hearted,” the daughter said.
This fear of blackmail stems from the aftermath of a famous 2006 case.

A young Chinese man named Peng Yu helped an elderly woman who fell while chasing a bus and lay on the road, but was later sued by the woman, who claimed Peng was responsible for her injuries.
A judge ruled in her favour, claiming that “common sense” dictated that no-one would take a stranger to the hospital and pay for their medical bills.
Liu admitted that his wife had the same fear, and filmed him helping the woman just in case.
Liu said it was his “instinct” as a doctor to help injured people.
“Hats off to the great doctor,” one online observer said.
“What a resourceful doctor, knowing to use materials at hand to save the patients,” another said.
