A Chinese hero used his bare hands to rip open the door of a burning vehicle, saving the driver moments before the car was engulfed in flames.
Footage of the rescue, taken by a witness from a distance, has gone viral on mainland social media, attracting more than 4 million views on a single platform.
A car and a petrol-driven tricycle collided on the road in Shaoguan, southern China’s Guangdong province, on May 1.
The car came to a stop at the side of the road after the crash, but the tricycle, which had rolled over, was on fire and surrounded by toxic fumes.

Zhong Wei, 35, witnessed the whole accident which happened next to his home.
He called an ambulance but noticed that the flames were about to engulf the driver’s side of the car any minute.
Without hesitation, he rushed to the vehicle.
The driver was stuck between the damaged driver’s side door and the A-pillar.
Initially, he tried to break open the door to get the driver out, but was forced back as the flames suddenly flared up.

Five seconds later he tried again.
This time successfully ripped open the door and pulled the injured driver free. He then dragged him out of the blazing vehicle through the front windscreen which had been smashed by the force of the collision.
He settled the unconscious driver safe on the roadside and only left after the first aid crews arrived.
It was reported that the victim Zhong saved was recovering in hospital.
The media then tracked down the hero after studying footage of the drama. It turned out that Zhong is a team leader at a town government’s agriculture office.
Zhong said in an interview with the Guangdong TV that while he felt scared on seeing a video of the incident, he knew in the moment that he could not wait until the professionals arrived, and would do the same thing again.
He said he was lucky not to have been injured in the rescue.

Zhong later checked his smartwatch, which showed that his heart rate soared from 90 to 151 beats per minute during the drama.
He said that it was muscle strength built up carrying heavy bags of fertiliser at work that enabled him to break open the car’s door.
The local government also honoured Zhong for his bravery.
“He did not save just one man, but his whole family behind him,” one online observer said.
“He is the kind of government official that will never be corrupt because he has put his life in danger to help others,” another said.
