A Chinese man devoted over a decade to caring for his fiancée after a car accident reduced her IQ to that of a five-year-old, touching many hearts online.
Shen Lan, 38, has committed himself to looking after Li Mei for the past 10 years in the Zhejiang province of eastern China.
In 2014, just before their wedding, Li suffered severe injuries in a traffic accident. She was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), where doctors issued three critical illness notices.
Li incurred significant damage to the left side of her brain. The medical team informed Shen that even if they managed to save her life, she might remain in a vegetative state.

Desperate for her recovery, Shen pleaded with them to do everything possible to save her and cared for her every day. Remarkably, Li awakened after three months.
Shen and Li, who is eight years his junior, both migrated from Guizhou province in southwestern China.
They met in 2009 at a petrol station, where Li worked part time.
Li’s parents disapproved of Shen due to his financial situation, but she stood firm in her desire to marry him. In 2013, when Shen was hospitalised for acute appendicitis, Li meticulously cared for him.

Shen revealed he exhausted all his savings on Li’s treatment following her accident, often eating just two meals a day to save money.
After awakening, Li’s cognitive abilities had declined to that of a five-year-old.
The cost of her treatment amounted to 5,000 yuan (US$700) daily. To cover expenses, Shen’s parents sold the family’s livestock and borrowed money from relatives. Following media reports of their story, they also received generous donations from the public.
Shen maintained a notebook documenting the dates and names of those who offered their assistance.
Li was discharged from the hospital in 2015. A nursing home in Zhejiang invited her to live there and provided rehabilitation services, waiving fees.

They also offered Shen a position as a nursing assistant, enabling him to earn a living while caring for Li.
Expressing gratitude for the kindness shown to them, Shen repaid their generosity by treating the elderly residents at the facility as if they were family.
A decade after the accident, Shen and Li, now married, continue to live happily at the nursing home.
He teaches her simple words, plays songs for her, and helps wash her long hair, which she refuses to cut short.

“I never found her troublesome. I strive to give her the best of what I can offer,” Shen stated.
He turned down his parents’ urging to seek another partner and rejected Li’s parents’ requests for them to have a baby, fearing it might jeopardise her health.
“Love creates miracles,” remarked one online observer.
“A man like Shen exists only in fairy tales,” commented another.
