A company boss in China set up 252 tables for his daughter’s grand wedding, then refused to pay the 520,000-yuan (US$72,000) bill.
A pork vendor, surnamed Wang, in eastern China’s Zhejiang province said the boss of a local company, surnamed Qian, commissioned him to prepare food for his daughter’s wedding banquet in April.
Wang said he dedicated himself to the task as he had known Qian for more than a decade.
He provided the pork, contacted seafood vendors in another city in Zhejiang and bought premium ingredients such as king crab, Australian lobster and leopard coral trout.

The wedding was during China’s May Day holiday, meaning the price was a little higher than usual.
Wang calculated that the total price for the 252 tables was 520,000 yuan and he only charged a 7,000 yuan (US$1,000) service fee. Wang also paid for ingredients out of his own pocket.
However, despite Wang checking the food selections and prices with Qian in advance, the latter refused to pay after the wedding was held.
Qian used excuses such as the ingredients were “of bad quality” or “priced too high” and even said he would only pay the cost price plus 40 yuan (US$6) per kilo.

Wang said the cost price was a trade secret and no vendor would ever reveal it. He said he also provided proof of payment for the items he bought to show he did not charge more.
Wang exposed the row in the local media but Qian still refused to pay, saying that he had “lost face”.
People on mainland social media were outraged.
“How shameless. He is a boss and is rich, and held a massive wedding with 252 tables. It was also super cheap as one table only cost 2,000 yuan (US$300). He must have received way more gift money from guests, and he chose to be a deadbeat,” said one person.
“He is losing face across the whole nation because of what he did, not because of the exposure,” another person said.

Chinese weddings with more than 30 tables, usually 10 people per table, are considered to be big events. It is normal to have just 10 to 20 tables at a wedding.
It was reported that the wedding at the centre of the row lasted for three days.
Wang said he would take Qian to court.
A lawyer at Shanghai Digtech Law Firm told Hongxing News that Wang could provide chat records with Qian as evidence of their deals.
