A Chinese businessman escaped a gun robbery in Brazil only to find a bullet lodged in his laptop hours later at the airport.
The man, surnamed Liu, was on a business trip to São Paulo, Brazil.
He was finishing work on October 1, and ordered a taxi to his five-star hotel to catch the flight back to China.
Liu said he wanted to get some fresh air, so he did not wait inside the hotel but walked to a petrol station about 100 metres from his hotel.

As he was chatting to a client on the phone near the exit of the station, a black car suddenly stopped in front of him.

Liu said his first reaction was to run, so he grabbed his bag which contained his passport, wallet, work laptop and files.
He looked back while running and saw the man shooting at him twice.

Liu said he did not feel any pain, so he thought the assailant was using a fake gun.
The robber took Liu’s suitcase and drove away.
Petrol station staff and some drivers came to check if Liu was injured. After seeing he was unscathed, they called the police.
Liu talked to the police investigation and continued to the airport.
While passing through the security check, he noticed a bullet lodged in his laptop.

It was only then that he realised the robber was really shooting at him and nearly injured him seriously had it not been for the laptop and an iron phone holder attached to it that stopped the bullet.
Liu said his iPad, hard drives and gifts for his daughter were all gone with the suitcase, and he went home with a bag with a bullet hole in it.
He said the police told him that gun robbery is not uncommon in Brazil, and any hope of retrieving his lost items was slim.
Liu shared his experience online on October 5. He said he realised how lucky he was.

He also offered some safety reminders to tourists in Brazil, such as not wandering outside, not wearing eye-catching clothes or walking with suitcases, and most importantly, leaving all your belongings behind when seeing a robber with a gun.
“I need to know the brand of his laptop,” said one online observer.
“Good fortune awaits him now that he has survived a catastrophe. He should offer the laptop up for worship,” said another.
“Companies which operate on a transnational basis should give their staff proper safety training,” said a third.
