Introduction

The Middle East crisis dramatically deepened on the weekend after the US launched strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. This marked a major escalation in the ongoing Israel-Iran air war.

The US has revealed details of its “Midnight Hammer” operation, a complex strike using B-2 bombers and “bunker buster” bombs for the first time. While US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth maintains the mission is “not about regime change”, President Donald Trump has publicly questioned this stance on social media.

At the UN Security Council, China’s UN ambassador Fu Cong strongly condemned the US strikes, calling for an “immediate ceasefire” and warned they “seriously violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law”. The US ambassador, Dorothy Shea, defended the strikes as necessary, warning Iran of “devastating retaliation” if it attacks US forces.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has hinted at possible retaliation against US assets in the region, as Iran eyed possibly closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a move that could severely impact global oil shipments.

Israel and Iran have exchanged wave after wave of devastating and deadly strikes since Israel launched its aerial campaign on June 13, saying Tehran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons and says its programme is for peaceful purposes only.
