Around two years after the spectacular rescue of four siblings from the Colombian rainforest, the father of the two younger children has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for sexual abuse.

The public prosecutor’s office on Saturday said the man raped his eldest stepdaughter several times from the age of 10.

Following the crash of a small plane in southern Colombia in 2023, the four siblings, aged 13, nine, five and one, spent 40 days in the rainforest until they were finally found by a search party made up of military personnel and indigenous people, in a case that made headlines worldwide.

The man who has now been sentenced was involved in the search for his children and stepchildren.

The children’s mother, the pilot and an indigenous leader were killed in the accident.

After the children were rescued, the siblings were handed over to youth welfare authorities, where the eldest girl reported the sexual abuse by her stepfather.
