At least 28 killed as Mexico battles widespread flooding from deadly downpours
Intense rainfall in 31 out of Mexico’s 32 states triggered landslides, cut off power and caused rivers to burst their banks
Mexico’s civil defence authorities reported intense rainfall in 31 of 32 states, with the worst-affected areas being Veracruz in the east, Queretaro and Hidalgo in the centre, and the north-central state of San Luis Potosi.
Hidalgo authorities reported 16 deaths and said at least 1,000 homes and hundreds of schools had been affected.
Puebla state Governor Alejandro Armenta said at least nine people had died due to incidents such as landslides and another five had been reported missing. Authorities reported two more deaths in Veracruz state.
“We are working to support the population, open roads and restore electrical services,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said in a social media post.
