Eight South African policeman have been arrested on suspicion of murder after dragging a man from the back of a police vehicle through a busy Johannesburg street, a government watchdog said on Friday.

They will answer to a charge of murder when they appear in court on Monday

South Africa’s police commissioner suspended eight police officers earlier on Friday accused of dragging an immigrant taxi driver behind their patrol car and killing him, prompting an international outcry.

Commissioner Riah Phiyega said that the eight officers had been disarmed and suspended for “callous and unacceptable behaviour” and the station commander had been removed from his post pending investigation.
