A security guard at a Spanish retirement home has been found guilty of killing 11 elderly residents, three of whom he forced to drink bleach, in what he tried to portray as acts of compassion.

Prosecutors are seeking a 194-year jail term after Joan Vila Dilme, 45, dubbed "the angel of death", was found guilty on Tuesday by a unanimous jury decision at a court hearing in the northeast town of Girona. Sentencing will take place later.

The defendant, employed at the La Caritat home in Olot, in the Catalonia region, was arrested in October 2010 after the death of a woman, 85, in a hospital.

Vila Dilme later confessed to her murder, saying he made her drink bleach, along with the killings of two other elderly people.

He said he carried out the string of killings in order to "end their suffering".

Eight other murders, committed between August 2009 and October 2010 were then exposed.
