Gambaccini, whose broadcasting career spans 40 years, was held on Tuesday as part of Operation Yewtree, the inquiry into alleged sexual offences by the late BBC television star Jimmy Savile and others.

Scotland Yard has refused to name the 64-year-old, but Gambaccini's identity was confirmed by sources on Friday.

The DJ, one of Britain's best known broadcasters, is the 15th arrest under Operation Yewtree since it began a year ago. He was arrested under the "others" strand of the investigation, meaning the allegations are not directly linked to Savile.

Shortly after 6pm on Tuesday, Scotland Yard announced that a 64-year-old man had been bailed to a date in early January "pending further inquiries". Yesterday, a spokesman said: "We don't give a running commentary on investigations and we don't confirm names [of arrestees before charge]."
