A seven-year-old girl survived a plane crash that killed four people, walked away from the wreckage and reported the crash to a local resident, authorities said.
The Piper PA-34, which was flying from Tallahassee, Florida to Mount Vernon, Illinois, reported engine trouble and lost contact with air traffic controllers over southwestern Kentucky at about 5.55pm on Friday, the US Federal Aviation Administration said.
About half an hour later, a Lyon County resident called police and said a seven-year-old girl was at his home claiming she had been involved in a plane crash, said Sergeant Dean Patterson, of the Kentucky State Police.
"This girl came out of the wreckage herself, found the closest residence and reported the crash," Patterson said. "It's a miracle that she survived it, but tragic that four others didn't."
The girl was in emotional distress and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Patterson said.
