French Alps avalanche: five soldiers killed in training exercise

Five soldiers have been killed by an avalanche during a training exercise in the French Alps.
The victims, believed to be French, were among a group of about 50 soldiers who were skiing near to the resort of Valfrejus, close to the border with Italy, police said.
Rescue teams scrambled to save the soldiers but five of them went into cardiac arrest after the avalanche hit them and they later died, the BBC reported.

Five other soldiers were seriously injured in the tragedy, French media reported.

The ski resort was closed while emergency services attended the scene.
Jean-Yves Le Drian, the France’s defence minister, is expected to visit the resort tomorrow.
