Pop singer George Michael dies at 53, ‘passing away peacefully’ on Christmas Day
British pop singer George Michael, who sold more than 100 million albums after shooting to fame in the 1980s with Wham! and continuing as a solo artist, died on Sunday at his home in England. He was 53.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist said in a statement.
“The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage,” the statement said.
The BBC quoted Thames Valley Police as saying that an ambulance had attended a property in Goring, Oxfordshire, where the singer had a home, at 1.42pm on Christmas Day, and that there were no suspicious circumstances.
Billboard magazine quoted Michael’s manager Michael Lippman as saying the singer had died of heart failure.
