Dutch police have arrested a third person over the tram shooting in the city of Utrecht that left three people dead and five injured.
Public prosecution office spokesman Ties Kortmann said on Tuesday three people are now in custody – the alleged gunman, 37-year-old Gokmen Tanis, and two others arrested on suspicion of involvement in the shooting on Monday morning.
Kortmann said Tanis was being held on suspicion of manslaughter with a possible terrorist motive, but added that investigations are continuing into what drove him to allegedly open fire in a tram.

A second man was arrested in connection with the crime, but the extent of his involvement in Monday’s events was unclear.
The same is true of the third suspect. No details have been released and the extent of the suspect’s involvement was not clear.
Tanis had been previously known to Dutch law enforcement, the ministry said.
“If there was a terrorist motive, then that will be found out,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Monday.
Prosecutors on Tuesday said there was no evidence yet that Tanis knew any of the victims and a possible terrorist motive was being taken seriously in part due to note found in the getaway car.
Authorities have not ruled out other possible motives.

On Monday night, Utrecht’s senior prosecutor Rutger Jeuken, said family issues could be involved and Turkish and Dutch media quoted friends and family saying they doubted radical political ideology was behind the rampage.
Mahmut Tanis, an uncle of Tanis who lives in the Netherlands, told Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency that he doubted radical motives.
“Looking at my nephew’s condition, the possibility that what he did was a terror attack is low,” he said, adding that he had not seen him in years and that his actions could stem from “matters of the heart”.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country’s intelligence agency was “looking into the matter”.
“Some say it is a family matter, some say it is a terror attack … Our intelligence agency is looking into the matter. I haven’t talked to our intelligence chief yet”, Erdogan told Ulke TV.
Shots were fired in a tram on 24 Oktoberplein, a junction in the west of the city, at 10:45am.
A witness told local broadcaster NOS the gunman seemed to have targeted one woman in particular. The woman had been on the ground, and people were helping her, said Daan Molenaar.
Molenaar said he saw an armed man running towards the group. “It looked as if he wanted to attack her again, or maybe the people who helped her,” he said.
Tanis has a long rap sheet, NOS reported. Among other crimes such as shoplifting and property damage, he was convicted of attempted murder in 2013. He is also a defendant in a rape trial that started two weeks ago.
