Coronavirus: France reports second death, this time of a French national

  • The man died overnight after being rushed to a Paris hospital in a serious condition on Tuesday evening
  • Four other new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, including two people returning from Italy, bringing the total number of infections to 17

A 60-year-old man has become the first French victim of the coronavirus in the country, the health ministry announced on Wednesday.

The man died overnight after being rushed to a Paris hospital in a serious condition on Tuesday evening, bringing the death toll in the country to two, said the ministry’s deputy head Jerome Salomon.

The first victim was an 80-year-old Chinese tourist, who died in hospital from the Covid-19 disease that the virus causes in mid-February.

France has reported four other new cases in the past 24 hours, including two people returning from Italy, bringing the total number of infections to 17.

Eleven other people have recovered from the disease which has killed more than 2,600 people worldwide and infected almost 80,000 others, mainly in China.
