Coronavirus: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in hospital as Queen Elizabeth urges unity in special address to nation
- Downing Street says Johnson in hospital is a ‘precautionary step’
- Queen Elizabeth says united effort would defeat the outbreak

Britain was thrown into a mixed state of shock and calmness as Prime Minister Boris Johnson was hospitalised for persistent Covid-19 symptoms just an hour after Queen Elizabeth gave her fifth special address in her 68-year reign.
Johnson, who was tested positive for the coronavirus more than 10 days ago, remained in charge of the government despite staying in a public hospital in London overnight Sunday.
“This is a precautionary step, as the prime minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus 10 days after testing positive for the virus,” a spokeswoman for No 10 Downing Street said.
It was considered sensible for doctors to see Johnson in person given he has ongoing symptoms, the spokeswoman added. The Times newspaper reported that he had been given oxygen treatment.
Johnson has “been working extremely hard” and he would stay in charge even from his hospital bed, his cabinet colleague Robert Jenrick, the housing minister, told BBC television on Monday.
Should the prime minister be incapacitated, the next in line would be the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, according to media reports.
