Dutch police arrest dozens of climate activists protesting in The Hague

Dozens of climate activists in the Netherlands have been arrested during a demonstration on a motorway in The Hague, police said on the radio on Saturday.
Activists from Extinction Rebellion had called for the demonstration to protest against the government’s energy policy, demanding an end to all fossil fuel subsidies.
Hundreds of demonstrators had blocked the access road to the A12 motorway in the Dutch political capital.
More than a hundred people had been removed from the road, according to police. Some had chained themselves to each other or glued themselves to the road.
Earlier in the week, six activists from Extinction Rebellion had been arrested after calling for the blockade. The arrests led to criticism from Dutch politicians, among others, who said that preventive detention was at odds with the freedom to protest.
