Three people have died in the train accident in southwestern Germany, a police spokesman said at the scene of the accident on Sunday evening.
At least 34 people were injured in the train accident, security sources said. An earlier statement mentioned that several passengers were critically injured.
Early on Sunday evening, at least two carriages of a regional train partially derailed near Riedlingen in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
The train was on its way from the town of Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm, both also located in the same state.
There had been a storm in the region earlier. Whether the accident is related to this is not yet known. A possible connection is being examined, said a spokeswoman for the Ulm police headquarters.
Photos showed broken branches and an axle of the train apparently torn off in the accident and lying a few metres away at the edge of the track bed.
Terrible scenes were unfolding in the otherwise tranquil region of Upper Swabia in the southeast of Baden-Württemberg: emergency services were to be seen kneeling on a partially overturned carriage, trying to rescue passengers from the train. In the background, screams could be heard.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his dismay following the train accident. “We mourn the victims. I extend my condolences to their relatives,” the conservative politician wrote on social media.
“I am in close contact with the interior minister and the transport minister and have asked them to support the rescue forces by all means,” Merz wrote further.
Baden-Württemberg Premier Winfried Kretschmann spoke of tragic news. He said he was shocked. “My deepest condolences go to the relatives of the victims.”
How the accident occurred is currently still unclear, said a spokesman for the federal police. Some 100 people were on the affected train of the RE 55 line, he said.
The regional express was travelling from Sigmaringen to Ulm when at least two carriages derailed near the Riedlingen district of Bechingen at around 6.10pm. The accident site is about 45 km (28 miles) southeast of Ulm, which is located on the border with Bavaria.
According to the German Weather Service (DWD), thunderstorms moved over the region in the early evening hours. Locally, 30 to 40 millilitres (0.035 fluid ounces) of rain fell in a short time, meteorologist Dominik Smieskol in Munich said.
However, the DWD does not have a measuring station at the exact accident site to provide specific information for there, he added.
The Reutlingen control centre reported a “mass casualty incident”, which refers to a situation where a large number of injured people need to be cared for.
At least four rescue helicopters were also deployed at the accident site.

Units from the Bavarian Red Cross were also supporting the efforts in the neighbouring state. Further units could be relocated to Baden-Württemberg if needed, it said in a statement.
Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl arrived at the accident site on Sunday evening to get an impression of the rescue operations, said his spokesman.
German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn said in a statement there were “many injured” and its thoughts were with the victims and their loved ones.
It was not clear what had caused the train to derail, it said, adding that it would support the authorities in their investigation.
The subsidiary DB Regio BW operates the regional train network, which includes the RE 55 line that runs hourly to every two hours.
On the network’s website, the company said train services between Munderkingen and Sigmaringen have been suspended.
“The reason for this is a train derailment on the route.” Initially, no information was available on the duration of the closure.
