At least nine pigs’ heads were found outside several mosques in the Paris region on Tuesday, the French capital’s police chief said – an incident that has sparked alarm over rising anti-Muslim hatred.

“Pig heads have been left in front of certain mosques … Four in Paris and five in the inner suburbs,” Laurent Nunez told a press conference, adding that police were not “ruling out the possibility of finding more”.

There may be parallels with past incidents linked to “foreign interference” Nunez added, but called for “extreme caution”.

In early June, three Serbs were charged over the vandalism of Jewish sites in a case investigators suspect was backed by Russia.

Three pigs’ heads were found in front of mosques in Paris’s 15th and 20th arrondissements, and another in a suitcase in the 18th, the prosecutor’s office said.

The last name of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, had been painted in blue at one of the locations, it added.
