Arab states launch biggest assault of Yemen war with attack on port city as Britain urges UN action
Attack by Saudi-led alliance against ruling Houthis risks worsening a major humanitarian crisis

A Saudi-led alliance of Arab states launched an attack on Yemen’s main port city on Wednesday in the largest battle of the war, aiming to bring the ruling Houthi movement to its knees at the risk of worsening the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis.
In response, Britain requested an urgent UN Security Council meeting over the assault on Hodeidah, diplomats said. The UN warned that the military operation could cripple deliveries of commercial goods and humanitarian aid to millions in Yemen who are on the brink of famine.
The council is expected to meet on Thursday, which would be the second time this week that the top UN body has held talks on the Yemen crisis.

Arab warplanes and warships were pounding Houthi fortifications to support ground operations by foreign and Yemeni troops massed south of the port of Hodeidah.
Fighting raged near Hodeidah airport and al-Durayhmi, a rural area 10km (6 miles) south of the city, media controlled by the Arab states and their Yemeni allies reported.
