The family of an Israeli hostage held in Gaza for almost 22 months accused Hamas on Saturday of tormenting him with hunger as part of a propaganda campaign.

The David family was reacting after Hamas’ armed wing released a video of 24-year-old Evyatar David, looking emaciated and weak in a narrow concrete tunnel, for the second night in a row.

“Hamas is using our son as a live experiment in a vile hunger campaign. The deliberate starvation of our son as part of a propaganda campaign is one of the most horrifying acts the world has seen,” the family said in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with David’s relatives as well as those of 21-year-old Rom Braslavski, who was also seen in the videos released by Palestinian militant groups, expressing his “profound shock” over the images, his office said.

The images of David and Braslavski have sparked strong reactions among Israelis, fuelling renewed calls to reach a truce and hostage release deal without delay.

“The prime minister expressed profound shock over the materials distributed by the terror organisations Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and told the families that the efforts to return all our hostages are ongoing, and will continue constantly and relentlessly,” said a statement from Netanyahu’s office released late on Saturday.
