Joe Biden allows Ukraine limited use of US weapons to strike inside Russia: officials
- US president allows use of US weaponry for ‘counterfire purposes in the Kharkiv region’, official says
- the decision marks a shift for Biden, who had refused to allow use of US weaponry for strikes inside Russia

US President Joe Biden quietly has authorised Kyiv to launch US-supplied weapons at military targets inside Russia that are supporting an offensive against the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, four US officials said.
The decision marks a policy shift by Biden, who had steadfastly refused to allow Ukraine to use American weaponry for strikes inside Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine using any Western weapon to strike Russian territory is only a matter of time, he told reporters in Stockholm, at a Ukraine-Northern Europe security summit on Friday.
“I think that using any weapon, Western kind of weapon, on the territory of Russia is a question of time,” Zelensky said.
“This is a step forward toward [the] goal … of making it possible to defend our people who live in the villages on the border,” he said.
The Kremlin said that “nothing is known” about details of Biden’s decision to allow Kyiv to attack Russia with US arms, and the usage of US arms by Ukraine shows how involved Washington is in the conflict.
