Father of Stanford rapist describes dumpster assault on woman as ‘20 minutes of action’, prompting outrage

The father of a former Stanford University swimmer who was convicted of sexual assault has sparked outrage after stating that his son should not be imprisoned for what he called “20 minutes of action.”
Last week, Brock Turner was sentenced to six months in county jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious and intoxicated woman behind a dumpster last year. The sentence has been decried as an inadequate punishment and sparked a recall petition of Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky.
Over the weekend, Michele Dauber, a law professor at Stanford University, tweeted some of the probation pre-sentence report, in which a statement attributed to Dan Turner said his son Brock’s life had “been deeply altered forever.”
He said that his son now “eats only to exist” and said the verdicts had broken and shattered Brock and the family.
“His life will never be the one that he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve,” the statement said. “That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”
Twitter users reacted angrily to the letter Dan Turner reportedly read in court ahead of the sentencing. In it, he called probation “the best answer for Brock in this situation.”
The statement came in a sharp contrast to the one read aloud in court by the victim. That statement went viral Friday after the 12-page, single-spaced letter was released to the media.
