Trump supporter Caitlyn Jenner and teen who sang anthem urge Trump to rethink transgender ruling
Caitlyn Jenner and the teenage singer best known for performing the US national anthem at Donald Trump's inauguration sent out messages Thursday calling out the US president for dropping federal protections for transgender students.
“I have a message for the trans kids of America: You’re winning. I know it doesn’t feel like it today or every day, but you’re winning,” said Jenner on a video posted to her Twitter account.
Urging support for the National Centre for Transgender Equality and Gavin Grimm — the transgender student who chose to use the boys bathroom and sparked a national debate climbing all the way up to the Supreme Court — Jenner went on to call out “bullies” including Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“Apparently even becoming Attorney General isn’t enough to cure some people of their insecurities,” Jenner said.
She told Trump himself to call her, “from one Republican to another.”
“This is a disaster, and you can still fix it,” Jenner said, reminding Trump he previously made a promise to “protect the LGBTQ community.”
Singer Jackie Evancho, 16, who has a transgender sister, requested a meeting with Trump in a Twitter message late on Wednesday, minutes after the administration revoked landmark guidance to public schools to let transgender students use the bathrooms of their choice.
“I am obviously disappointed in the @POTUS decision to send the #transgender bathroom issue to the states to decide. #sisterlove,” she wrote from her account, @jackieevancho.
Trump “gave me the honor” of singing at the inauguration, she added in another tweet. “Pls give me & my sis the honor 2 meet with u 2 talk #transgender rghts.”
