Despite speculation that the pulsing seen on KIC 8462852 – known as “Tabby’s Star” – might be due to an orbiting alien megastructure, scientists now believe that its unusual light signals are likely from dusty comet fragments that blocked the light of the star as they passed in front of it in 2011 and 2013. It was too good to be true. Despite hopes from UFO-watchers that aliens might be behind the bizarre pulsing of a distant star, scientists have now ruled out E.T. and company.

“Tabby’s Star” had been puzzling scientists with its sporadic dimming and brightening, leading some to suggest that its light may have been blocked by an orbiting alien megastructure.

But Astronomers said on Wednesday that the most thorough study to date of the star, officially called KIC 8462852, showed that its dimming episodes are not caused by a large opaque object passing in front of it.

The dimming could be due to some sort of dust, they said, though the cause remains uncertain.

The researchers relied on observations of Tabby’s Star from March 2016 to December 2017 using Las Cumbres Observatory telescopes in Maui and the Canary Islands.
