Thomas J. Mace-Archer-Mills, chairman and founder of the British Monarchist Society and Foundation, was almost as ubiquitous as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during their wedding in Windsor, England, two weeks ago.

Speaking in a plummy British accent, the self-described expert on the British monarchy enlightened French, American, Russian and even UK television crews about the royal family and their latest member.

And yet, incredibly, it was only this week that the 38-year-old was unveiled not as a triple-barrelled Brit, but as Tommy Muscatello from New York.

An Italian-American, he grew up an hour north of Albany, in New York before moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for college, where he studied politics and history.

Soon, he started to work in real estate and gave himself a hyphenated last name, adding DeLaCroix to the end to give himself a boost in business with French Canadian clients.

But as The Wall Street Journal revealed on Thursday, for years he has been trading under another name - Mace-Archer-Mills - which he uses to represent his foundation, which he began in 2012, in some of Britain’s most recognised outlets, including the BBC and The Economist.

But this isn’t a scam to get in the papers, the American says - it’s actually who he is inside.
