Democrat Stacey Abrams, the 2018 Democratic nominee for governor in Georgia, bashed President Donald Trump for the recent government shutdown as she delivered her party's response to the State of the Union.

In her rebuttal to Trump's speech, Abrams shared her family's history and her experiences as the state House minority leader in Georgia, and she strongly criticised the president for trying to gut Obamacare and warned about voter suppression in America.

But she centred her most pointed criticism on the president's role in the most recent government shutdown, saying that Trump made federal workers' “livelihoods a pawn for political games”.

“The shutdown was a stunt engineered by the president of the United States, one that defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people – but our values,” Abrams said in the roughly ten-minute long speech.

Abrams became one of the brightest Democratic stars in the 2018 midterms despite losing the gubernatorial race in Georgia, where she refused to concede on election night and argued that the race was plagued by voter suppression.
