Politico | Democrat Stacey Abrams bashes Donald Trump for shutdown ‘stunt’ in State of the Union response
- The Georgia Democrat, who is considering running for Senate in 2020, talked about working across the aisle in her state
Democrat Stacey Abrams, the 2018 Democratic nominee for governor in Georgia, bashed President Donald Trump for the recent government shutdown as she delivered her party's response to the State of the Union.
But she centred her most pointed criticism on the president's role in the most recent government shutdown, saying that Trump made federal workers' “livelihoods a pawn for political games”.
“The shutdown was a stunt engineered by the president of the United States, one that defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people – but our values,” Abrams said in the roughly ten-minute long speech.
Abrams became one of the brightest Democratic stars in the 2018 midterms despite losing the gubernatorial race in Georgia, where she refused to concede on election night and argued that the race was plagued by voter suppression.
