Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday the United States is hopeful that denuclearisation negotiations with North Korea will continue, hours after Pyongyang reportedly said it may quit talks.

“We are hopeful that we can continue to hold this conversation, negotiations,” Pompeo told reporters.

Pompeo also said the United States expects North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to keep his promise to US President Donald Trump, offered during their meeting last month in Vietnam, that Pyongyang will continue to refrain from nuclear or missile tests.

“In Hanoi on multiple occasions he spoke directly to the president and made a commitment he would not resume nuclear testing nor would he resume missile testing,” the top US diplomat said.

“That’s Chairman Kim’s word, we have every expectation that he will live up to that,” he said, referring to the North’s leader as his title of chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
