A 50-year-old Vancouver man has been charged with assault, more than four months after a 92-year-old Chinese dementia sufferer was ejected from a convenience store, triggering a hate-crime investigation.

Jamie Allen Bezanson has been charged with one count of assault, Vancouver police announced on Thursday. He is due in court on August 10.

The police statement said it had no further information to provide, as the matter was before the courts.

The South China Morning Post reported last month that police had recommended charges in the case, which drew widespread attention as a result of a security camera video of the March 13 incident at an East Vancouver 7-Eleven store. The elderly man, surnamed Kwong, was not seriously hurt.
