US President Joe Biden gave his first address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday (Thursday morning Hong Kong time), a prime time speech on the eve of his 100th day in office. Biden used the speech to talk about what he’s accomplished in the opening months of his presidency, and laid out his other domestic and foreign policy priorities.

The setting for Biden’s maiden address to Congress as president reflected the crisis times in which he took office. Security has been at top level around the Capitol building since the January 6 riot when Donald Trump supporters rampaged against what the Republican falsely claimed was a stolen election.

The pandemic also loomed heavily. Instead of a House chamber crammed with the usual 1,600 or so politicians and guests, there was only a select group of around 200.

After the address, Biden will follow in the path of his predecessors by taking his message directly to voters. He plans visits to key swing states to amplify his proposals. That includes a trip Thursday to Atlanta, where Biden is expected to hold a car rally to celebrate his 100th day in office.
