US President Joe Biden marked his 100th day in office at a celebratory pandemic-induced car rally outside Atlanta to promote his US$4 trillion spending proposals designed to redistribute the nation’s wealth and lift millions of Americans out of poverty.

More than 300 cars gathered at the Infinite Energy Centre in Duluth with mask-clad attendees honking horns. A huge American flag was held up by a pair of construction vehicles at the back of the car park. Signs read “100 Days” and “Getting Back on Track”.

“It’s only been 100 days but I tell you, I’ve never been more optimistic about the future in America,” Biden told the crowd. “America is on the move again. We’re choosing hope over fear, truth over lies, light over darkness. We’re working. We’re working again. We’re dreaming again. We’re discovering again. And we’re leading the world again.”

Biden spent the bulk of his brief remarks touting his spending plans that would offer universal prekindergarten, free community college, 12 weeks of paid family leave and millions of “good paying jobs”.

“In the 21st century, infrastructure isn’t just steel and concrete. It’s people,” said Biden, who removed his mask to speak. “It’s a once-in-a-generation investment in America.”
