The Biden administration has announced which countries will share in the first 25 million Covid-19 vaccine doses donated by the US to help low- and middle-income nations combat the pandemic.
The US will route about 19 million doses – roughly 75 per cent – through the Covax Facility global vaccine aid programme, the White House said Wednesday. The Biden administration will send the remaining 25 per cent of the doses directly to specific countries.

The White House announcement comes after months of debate within the administration about whether it could spare shots despite weakening US demand and a growing surplus of doses. Officials also struggled to prioritise requests for vaccines from more than four dozen countries amid surging infections and deaths around the globe.
“We are sharing these doses not to secure favours or extract concessions,” President Joe Biden said in a statement on Wednesday. “We are sharing these vaccines to save lives and to lead the world in bringing an end to the pandemic, with the power of our example and with our values.”
